Mark was born the third of four rough and rowdy boys in the rural desert of New Mexico. His father was a
proud, hard working man who loved the outdoors, while his devout mother was a talented bowler who
captained her own team in state competition. Growing up in the Assembly of God church, he discovered a
passion for revival style music and performance. As a boy, despite the intimidation and embarrassment of
his older brothers, Mark tried out for every school and church play – earning leading roles in such
classics as “The Bible Tells Me So Show” and “Going Buggy.” The spotlight seemed to be a natural fit.
When Mark was ten, the family uprooted and moved to Winston-Salem, NC. The culture shock of an urban
city and his mother joining the work force would forever change the family dynamics. Mark immersed
himself in music and built his first guitar from plywood and fishing line. After working some odd jobs and
saving every dime, at thirteen, he purchased his first real bass guitar from a local pawn shop. Although
traditional education suited Mark poorly, he thrived in orchestra and jazz band. He relentlessly played in
jam sessions outside of school and even created a couple of bands, but leaving home at sixteen forced
Mark to grow up quickly.
Working full time to make ends meet was a reality check on a music career, but Mark never gave up on his
dream, and, at seventeen, joined the Madison Avenue Band with brother, Matt. Band leader and mentor
Alan Wood schooled Mark on the ins and outs of a working band, allowing him to hone the skills necessary
for the music business.
Mark left the Madison Avenue band in 2000 and made a strategic move to the rich music scene in Myrtle
Beach, SC. Forming a successful band with drummer Dan Evans in 2001 allowed Mark to realize his dreams
of being a full time musician. With achieving greater goals in mind, and personnel changes in the band,
Mark and Danny brought on the talents of Mike McCoy and Mark Montanaro to form The Necessary Band
in 2007. Reaching for the stars, Mark continues to write, record and perform music with the band whose
ultimate goal is a record deal and, yeah, world domination.
