Born In January of 1979 in New Mexico, I grew up in
the church with a love for music.  Building my first
guitar out of plywood and fishing string, I always knew
what direction I was heading in.  Moving to North
Carolina in 1989, I had the opportunity of music
education in school, by becoming a bass player in both
Orchestra and Jazz Band.  Outside of school, I
relentlessly played in jam sessions and created a
couple of bands.  At 17, I experienced the dynamics of
a successful working band, and learned how to make a
living at my craft.  Never looking back, I relocated to
South Carolina in 2000, where I have continued to
play, write, and perform music.

Mark's Gear:  I am a die hard "Fender Man".  I love my
American Hot-Rodded P Bass, as well as my American
Jazz.  I also play an electric upright, built by Dean
Markley, as well as the Old Dog House.  I'm powered
by the 300 Pro series Fender All Tube Head, with a
custom built 18" (2)10" combo.  I've dubbed it the
Ass-Kicker".  My knobs are turned by my loving wife,
Stephanie, and my two monsters, Harley and Miles.

Guitar/Vocals
I was born in 1957, in Raleigh, NC.  My family moved to Richmond, VA
when I was about six.  I got my first guitar at 8 years old, and by 9,
was really into learning the instrument.  Living in Richmond played a
major part in that development.  I swear to this day, that there are as
many good guitar players in that area as in Nashville TN.  Being there
made me practice for hours every day, so I would be as good, or
better, than the rest.

My family moved to Atlanta when I was 15, I was surprised at the
lack of a local music scene for such a big city.  Fortunately, it
improved immensely the longer I was there.  By the time I was 17, I
was playing music at night and going to high school during the day.  I
played all the clubs in Underground Atlanta, which, in those days,
was like a mini New Orleans.  Today it is scrubbed clean and safe
like a mall, but  those days, it teemed with clubs and musicians of all
types.  I even played some gigs with The Manhattans, whose hit
"Let's Just Kiss and Say Good-bye" was on the radio at the time (and
lucky for me, the guitarist was in jail at the time).  I was with only
soul bands then, and that music hit home with me.  I still have a great
collection of soul music on vinyl that will most likely never be
re-released.  What a loss.

At 18, I joined a fairly known group, a rock &roll band, called Fragile.
As soon as I graduated high school, I hit the road with this band.  We
toured the east coast for four solid years.  After the constant travel,
everyone was burned out, and the band split up.  I joined various
other bands through my twenties and thirties. Some of the people I
had the good fortune to work with, are still my best friends today.

My wife and I moved to Myrtle Beach in 1988.  Not being able to find a
band situation that suited my musical style, I went the route of solo
acoustic Singer-Songwriter for the next several years, and made
two CDs.  The first is acoustic and mellow, the second is flat-out
rock&roll.  Both are all original and were very satisfying to record,
exactly what I wanted to say at each point in my life.  All the while
though, my electric guitars were feeling neglected and I was itching
to get together with some other players and rip it up.

When I saw the Necessary boys, I thought, "I should be playing with
these guys."  I saw Seth Funderburke doing sound at a show in the
old Train Depot earlier this year.  He said the guys were auditioning
guitar players for the new line-up.  I went straight home and called
Mark to set up an audition.  The audition was set for a miserable
rainy day at Sea Note studio.  I am so at home in that studio, having
recorded both my CD's there, and due to the positive vibe form
everyone who works there.  I showed up for my audition and we
clicked right off... that's where we are.  I am pleased to find, after all
this time playing solo, a band of  talented musicians that get along
and I can play with, The Necessary Band.

I was born and raised in Rockville, MD.  I lived with my mom
Carolyn, my dad Al, and sisters Christina and Monica.  I
started picking out tunes on the piano, sitting next to Dad
when I was 4, but didn't take lessons until I was 14.  I took
lessons for one year, and Frank Plummer, my teacher, taught
me the structure that is essential to play professionally.

At Coastal Carolina University,  I learned how to develop my
raw talent from Dan O'R
eily.  Dan also taught me how to be
professional, "The Do's and Don'ts" I guess you could say.
He taught me how to use my ear to fit in a groove with other
musicians.  Basically, Dan taught me how to play in a band.
Dan, I owe you a great debt.

After searching for 6 years for the right opportunity to play
here in Myrtle Beach, I'm so thankful to have found these
amazing musicians and friends.  A dream come true.

Thanks Mom and Dad for always believing in me.  None of
this would be possible without you.
